I walk toward our quarters with Heart and steal shy glances every now and then. Finally I ask about what is on my mind.

“What did you and Suzanna talk about while I was gone visiting Heidi and the others?”

“Suzanna told me about how very long ago a group of survivalists carved out the cave town and called it Jamestown. She said they feared the country was getting too dangerous and carved a safe haven out of the mountain.”

I nodded. I had known that Karst was once called Jamestown, but no one talks about why they changed the name.

“And she told me about the white walls. About how Stanley James, a founder of Jamestown, was a lover of fine things and shipped white clay called kaolin from what once was the state of Georgia, to fire onto the walls, to make them aesthetically pleasing.” She pauses. “That was just before the war broke out. Before the bombing changed everything.”

“She did give you quite the history lesson,” I say. “What else did you talk about?”

“She told me about the first time she came to Karst.” She smiles. “And we talked about you, of course.”

I spin around to look at her.

“I am teasing you.”

I stare at her.

“What?” she asks.

“I don’t think you’ve ever really done that—tease me.”

“I don’t suppose I have.”

We arrive at our quarters and go inside. I want to ask her about her worship time but don’t know how to broach the subject. Then she does it for me.

“I spent time this morning worshipping with the Progressives.”

“How was that?” I smile, happy that I don’t have to be the one to bring it up.

She looks away, appears shy.

“Was it a good experience for you? You don’t have to go back if you don’t want to.”

“It’s not that I don’t want to go again. It was just very confusing for me.”

“How so?” I want her to feel she can speak freely with me.

“They have an ancient Bible. An actual book. When they read from it, I did not recognize God’s word.”

No wonder she was confused. There is often discussion in Karst about the bastardization of the Christian readings that was done by the racists who hijacked the religion long ago. “Did you like the words though?”

“I did, very much so. I also love how joyous the Progressives are. And I like how their music and hymns are… softer.” She smiles now. “I’ve noticed that everything is softer here—the music, the fabric, the energy.”

I smile, agreeing wholeheartedly.

“There was a kind energy in worship today. I asked Sister Nanette if that is always the case and she said yes. She described it as touchy-feely,” Heart says.

“The Anointed aren’t touchy-feely, I take it?”

“No, not at all.”

“So.” Feeling a new connection with her, I ask what I’d wanted to for a long time. “What did a Day of Atonement look like in ND3?”

“Day of Atonement?”

“You know, when we weren’t allowed out of our cells so you could atone for your treatment of us.”

“Prayer Day. We called it Prayer Day.
